Styles for the shorties

No, not those under five feet tall. Maybe I’ll tackle that some other time. I mean ladies sporting totally modern, super hip short locks. I was inspired to take on this topic a few days ago when I visited the salon in order to have my long ladylike tresses converted into an ultra-short, face-framing do. What can I say? I’m brave like that. And it’s only hair. Right?

Cut to shortly thereafter when The Beard hinted he might be inclined to pop the question one of these days (YAY!) and I realized I’d never even considered how someone with hair as short as mine might go about styling it for their wedding. Updo’s are almost the least complicated thing one can do because one typically leaves the doing of it to an accomplished stylist. And, with a longish updo, there are all manner of things one can pin into or onto it.

That leaves headbands, crowns and wreaths, little clips, and plain. Of course, that accomplished stylist I was thinking about will be able to think of something, but it’s best to have at least some idea of what you want. Here are three looks from WeddingHair.com that I like and that can be purchased in kit form:

Of course, none of this has helped me determine whether wearing a veil is even a possibility with two-inch long hair.

The site http://www.thehairstyler.com has 3,000 hairstyles that you can try on picture of yourself. The site includes wedding styles, tips, and what kind of hair, face shape, and level of maintenance the style is good for. It’s $15 for 6 monhts. This site was helpful to me for selecting a new hairdo.

Wow, Lori. That sounds absolutely fantastic! Right now, according to the site, I’m rocking the “Halle Berry.”

I’ve got a pixie cut right now, too. Long hair just isn’t for me. For wedding stuff, I’ll probably just make it look a little more polished with some shaping gel and tuck a flower behind my ear.

Ooh, that sounds lovely, the Di!

Goodness, you are the brave one. Was it something in particular that prompted this change, which seems like a pretty major one? (If you don’t mind my asking.) It’s not every day a woman says, “Hmmm. I think I’ll whack off a yard of hair and leave two inches.” Usually one creeps up on it, nicking off a couple of inches at a time. Or tries on wigs first.

Don’t forget, if you want a veil, you can have it mounted onto the crown/tiara/bandeau thingy. Veils were still very popular in the 1920′s, even amongst the very short-haired ladies.

Well, La BellaDonna, I have reeeeaaaaally thick hair. The circumference of my ponytail is as big as the hole my fingers make when I make an “okay” sign. While my hair is usually soft and shiny, it’s also an escape artist. Most styles I’ve tried – and that’s not too many – come undone or start looking disheveled regardless of how much product or how many bobby pins I use. If I style it down or blow it out, it’s so heavy on my shoulders and back that it drives me crazy. So I end up putting it in a ponytail just about every dang day. I just got sick of looking like a shlump and figured that if I cut it, I could just make it all crazy and spiky in about five seconds time in the morning…but it looks like it took longer. And so it’s been!

Tiaras! I love tiaras. I have one that my grandmother won in the 60′s at their yacht club’s Halloween costume contest. She was a sassy bellydancer in a teeny bikini she made herself. Anyhow, I love tiaras, even if they aren’t the fashion of the moment!

Regarding updos – I am a very experienced bridesmaid (!) and I have to say, if “he” ever proposes…I will definitely not have an updo. The last one took 137 hair pins, and after an hour, I could feel every single one poking directly into my brain. By the end of the day, I’d rather have spent the day being beaten with sticks. It would have hurt less. They can look amazing, but if they spoil your special day…

Never teh Bride, I wish I could get a pixie cut like yours for the same reasons you mentioned, but I don’t have the face shape for it. The bob I have works well, though.

Sandra, have you tried jaw clips like those shown in the second and third photographs above? They comfortably hold quite a lot of hair.

I hadn’t, Lori – in the interests of being an obedient bridesmaid! I also have very thick and heavy hair, though, but I must get some a try them. It’d be good to be able to have a nice up-do for formal dinners, and for a couple of weddings I’m going to this summer.
    Thanks for the tip!

Don’t skimp on ‘em, though. I’m such a sucker for drugstore clips…and when you have hair as thick as mind, they tend to snap or shimmy off. A good set of clips will hold plenty of hair, thick or not.
