I want to be an outlander

By Never teh Bride

Outlander

I hate to admit it, but I am so obsessed with the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I usually hate romance novels but this novel cleverly disguises itself as historical fiction. Or, rather, the second book, Dragonfly in Amber does. Outlander is a bit more romancey. Anyway, reading the first two books started me on a quest for a wedding ring like the one the protagonist receives or at least a wedding band of a Scottish nature.

I know I’ve always maintained that I wanted a plain gold band, but I am so in love with the rings from Scottish Heirloom Jewelry. Particularly the cluster knot band below.

The bride of Jamie ring

This is me swooning like a romance novel heroine!

!I just finished tha latest novel in that series! Yay Diana Gabaldon! I am so glad that I ignored my skepticism about a romance novel featuring a time travelling english nurse & read it. Wonderful books. Addictive.

Bear in mind that a ring as featured above is lovely, but might get a lot of grot stuck in, just from day to day life.

  2. Never teh Bride Says:

That’s a good point, Kourtney. Such a ring would no doubt need to be soaked and scrubbed now and again.

  3. Lee Whiteside Says:

You should put a link into Diana’s home page, http://www.dianagabaldon.com.

Good point, Lee, and sorry for the oversight. It’s added!

  5. Megaera Says:

Hah! And my mother and I got sucked into the series because our bookstore stuck it in the scifi/fantasy section. About forty pages into the first book, my mother let out a shriek, “NOOOO! It’s ROMANCE…but I can’t stop reading!”

  6. Never teh Bride Says:

That’s how I felt as well, Megaera! It’s captivating!

  7. anne Says:

Oh lord, I couldn’t get these books out of my head for two years. I still think of them fondly, but don’t dare to re-read them (or read the latest one) because I can’t lose that big a chunk of time right now.

I even named my dog Jamie, because he’s big and red. Pathetic.

    BTW, love that ring!

  8. Amy B Says:

So glad that I am not the only person completely obsessed with the Outlander Series! I have been neglecting virtually everything for the last 3 weeks while I reread all 5500+ pages of this series en route to the latest book. I HATE romance novels but LOVE this series. Got the last book in Oct but couldn’t start even the first until after Christmas due to time constraints……they’re ridiculously addictive but GREAT.

  9. Never teh Bride Says:

I agree, Amy. It feels so great to know that I’m not the only Outlander addict around here!

  10. Chaeriste Says:

LOVELOVELOVE the Outlander series. I have hooked so many people onto them - it’s like a cult. Everyone I know who has read it has purchased a set for themselves. The funniest line is in “Dragonfly” in Paris… when Claire comes back from de la Tour’s house and Jamie reacts to her description of hair removal with ‘you mean the hairs on her HONEYPOT?!?!’. My friend and I STILL laugh about that.

  11. mainegirl Says:

Hmm. Now I will have to go to the library.

This is a pretty ring–you picked the nicest one on that site!

  12. jenny Says:

Oh dear: I get hooked on series like this one and my children run around naked and hungry for days until I’ve plowed through the entire lot.

Love the ring. Absolutely timeless & elegant. And it looks comfy, too!

  13. Stacey Says:

I love these books! I have read all 6 of them a minimum of 3 times. The ring is beautiful - however - isn’t it supposed to be silver? A friend loaned me her set and I have since bought 2 sets. I never read romance but this …..well, it made me want to study history:)

  14. Anna Dean Says:

I see you list http://www.scottish-heirloom.com on your site This is not a viable company. I ordered a ring November 2006 for for Xmas I never got the ring and I can’t get them to respond to my emails. I paid them via PayPal. PayPal cannot help. I have reported them to Scottish police web owners name is Ed Ktuger. Any info please let me know. It would be sad if a newly engaged couples bought from this company and didn’t get their rings. I’ve lost my money and can’t get any answers! thank you.

  15. Never teh Bride Says:

Goodness gracious, Anna Dean, I am so sorry to hear you’re having problems with the company. I wish I had more information for you, but I’ve only coveted their rings…never ordered one. Let us know if anything changes - or if you get a response from the police…I’d love to be able to publicly call them on bad business practices if they’re screwing people over.

  16. Michelle M. Says:

There are a lot of of Diana Gabaldon fans out there. Two of us asked Diana permission to make Claire’s Ring. We got it and now its available for fans to buy! This was a labor of love for us, no profit was made by us. Enjoy!

  17. Never teh Bride Says:

Wow, Michelle, that is so cool!

  18. Anna Dean Says:

It is me again. I did hear from these people after I blasted them to every where I found a reference to the company. He said he wanted to make it right and send a matching ring for me. That was Jan 14 2007. Now a month later, despite some emails claiming he’d mail “international” I have not seen my rings. I’d just like my money back or the rings at this point.

It appears they operate out of their home Stuart & Leslie Noble, 376R Welsome Bay Rd Welcome Bay Tauranga 0-7-544 3934
I have contacted the New Zealand authorities. I’ll keep you posted.

Please tell your brides: BUYER BEWARE.

  19. Karen Says:

I too am having difficulties with Stuart from Scottish Heirloom. What a scam. I ordered a ring in January and have yet to see a ring or hear back from them. I will be pressing charges if possible

  20. Karen Says:

I spoke to Scottish Heirloom yesterday and was told the ring will be sent out today. I should hopefully have it by next week. If not, I will let you all know as well. So much for my husband’s birthday gift. His birthday was Feb 25.
