Matrimonial movies to improve the mood

By Never teh Bride

When the weather is grey and dreary (like it is today where I live), I like to put on one of The Beard’s old ratty sweaters and my comfy slippers, and spend the afternoon watching movies. And not just any movies. I’m talking about looooooove stories. Tear-jerkers, movies that make me laugh, and movies that make me cry.

Love Tickles (My Best Friend\'s Wedding / Sleepless in Seattle / The Wedding Planner / As Good as It Gets)

I like to get the most love story bang for my love story buck. So I bought Love Tickles - a four disc set that includes My Best Friend’s Wedding, Sleepless in Seattle, The Wedding Planner, and As Good as It Gets. The last one is my favorite, just because it’s so bizarre.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

I love this movie! If you think all of the Windex references in My Big Fat Greek Wedding are pure fiction, you need to meet my family. At my parents’ house, Windex is used as a weapon as well as for wiping down counters. Plus it’s nice to watch a movie full of normal looking people every once in a while!

So I Married an Axe Murderer

So I Married an Axe Murderer is full of awesome, silly fun and says a lot about the dangers of being too suspicious.

I hope those of you who are having a grey day like mine or are just in a plain old grey mood will see fit to join me in hunkering down on the couch, watching some flicks, and dreaming about love!

Bit of trivia: I know the wedding piper in So I Married an Axe Murderer. He was very put out that they replaced his actual piping with someone else’s on the soundtrack. OTOH, the whiskers and the outfit and the leopard-skin pipes? Are all Jack’s. Actually, that’s one of his more…shall we say restrained piping costumes.

    That’s so cool!

  3. Bria Says:

I dated a bagpiper once. It was weird.

  4. Kristin Says:

Great movies! I’m a huge fan of So I Married and it’s great to see it get the props it deserves! Another bit of trivia–it seems to me that on the old cover for the movie, Harriet was shown with a big axe-shadow behind her, as a complement to Charlie’s flowers. Now, obviously, it’s not there. Can anyone confirm this?

By the way, NtB, I really enjoy your blog (even though I’m just about as far away from the altar as one can get)!

    Thanks, Kristin!

As an aside, I was going to say that I wish The Beard was a piper, but the truth is I just wish I could get him to wear a kilt!

  6. Stacy Says:

Hmmm… kilts. I know my fiance owns a kilt. He claims it doesn’t fit properly right now. I tell him to lose weight then (as if I’m ont to talk, though…)

And those are all fun movies! Although what I find amazing is that I don’t own a single one of the movies in that Love Tickles set. Usually, I seem to own at least one of them.

I admit, though: I’ve never seen all of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. We rented it, and the DVD was damaged, then never got around to renting it again.

Love love love SIMAAM - totally underrated movie and a great performance by pre-sellout Mike Myers.

  8. Kai Jones Says:

Hrrm, what about some classics? “Father of the Bride” (the Spencer Tracy version), or “The Philadelphia Story” (either Katherine Hepburn or the very watchable Grace Kelly in “High Society”)? Or “June Bride,” with Bette Davis?

  9. Never teh Bride Says:

I never say no to a classic love story, Kai Jones :-)

  10. Twistie Says:

Oh, Kai Jones, it’s so nice to see someone remembers the awesome Spencer Tracy original of Father of the Bride! Probably my fave wedding movie ever!

And sara, it’s nice to see someone else has as much of a soft-spot for SIMAAM.

Anyone who hasn’t seen those two and likes a good laugh, I highly recommend them both.
