I LOVED the Barbie styling head! Except if you brushed too hard (and the hair was always ratty and snarly, no matter what you did), the head would become detatched from the neck/decolletage. You'd be left with a fairly heavy head swinging from the lock of hair that was wrapped around your brush.

All right: maybe it was creepier than I realized at the time...

OMG! That thing freaked me out right down to my socks! (shudders) I remember there were other styling heads, too. They bothered me. I had a nightmare about one once. I don't like to talk about it.

On the catwalk, yeah, on the catwalk...I shake my little tush on the catwalk.

Sorry, NtB, but you totally got that song stuck in my head with your last line. Thought I'd spread the, er, joy.

I'm with you on both counts, Style Graduate and Twistie.

Little girls (and grown women) are still fed messages about fairy tale weddings and prince charmings and so on.

And Barbie seems to have come full circle. She went from being a fashion icon to an actualized, empowered woman. And now she is back in the designer dresses, strutting her stuff on the catwalk.

That's a scary article, Style Graduate! While I like pretty bridal gowns and fantasies about a singing/acting career, the thing that used to be positive about Barbie was the sheer number of solid, attainable professions she used to represent along with the big, glittery fantasies. I remember well when Barbie could be a vet, an astronaut, a teacher, a doctor (and not one whose primary job appears to be giving babies their bottles!), a nurse, a politician, or a soldier as well as an actress, a model, or a ballerina. She could grow our food as a farmer or make a killing on the stock market as a business woman. She could surf the waves or win Olympic gold as an athlete...or she could cheer the team on from the sidelines.

I miss the Barbie who had choices. If she still could be an astronaut, I'd be happier about the designer line of wedding gowns.

That said, these are lovely dresses. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but dammit, I want mine back!

Hmm. It makes me think of this post: http://mollysavestheday.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_mollysavestheday_archive.html#115290016410092725

Not that there is anything wrong with the dolls themselves, or the dresses; they are beautiful. But I'm not sure how I feel about the extent of the idolization of weddings and brides that goes on. I am well aware that this is a wedding blog, but the fact that this stuff is everywhere out there is a sign to me that something is not quite right. :)
