We eloped in July, and I wore a black silk dress… It cost $5 at Goodwill, and it was beautiful. Almost as beautiful as this shantung silk outfit.

If my fabulous parents weren’t helping us heavily with financing our wedding, we’d totally be having the Vegas wedding elopement going on. There are times we’re still tempted, but we really think we’d regret not having the party and family and friends there.

Of course, my grandparents eloped in 1941 while my grandfather was still in high school and over parental objections (my badboy grandfather wasn’t good enough for my Old Texas Money grandmother.) They were married for over 50 years.

Right! Style first. (Although the manolo would not have approved of my shoes. Ah well. Shoes are not something I splurge on.)

Now it’s just the last catering details and getting invites out. Whee. (And sadly already one negative rsvp from a friend who can’t make the new date.)

My husband and I ran off and eloped on the 5th of August. I wore a red dress. It was great. In vegas, because we already had the license because that’s where the original plans were for.

We’re still going to do a ceremony there for family in friends in November because my MOH will kill me if she doesn’t get to wear the dress (and we’ve outlaid a lot in deposits, etc, and I want to wear my dress, and this way we’ll actually get a honeymoon), but it’s a lot less stressful on the two of us now

And people can still get hitched in the middle of the night if they like - the 24 hour chapels aren’t closing, they just need to be sure to have their license by midnight. (And besides, it might stop a lot of 48 hour celebrity marriages!)

Eloping wasn’t for me, but it was for a good friend of mine. Her honey surprised her. They’d been engaged for some months, but hadn’t planned anything specific yet. A band they like was playing in Vegas one weekend, so he told her he got tickets. What he didn’t tell her was that he’d arranged to fly her parents and sister out. My friend was really glad he encouraged her so hard to pack a nice dress! LOL!

She was glad not to have to hassle with planning a wedding and picking a gown she’d never wear again. A wedding seemed like a lot of work to her, so eloping was the perfect solution in her case.

Me, I wouldn’t have missed my wedding for the world, but if eloping is your thing, I say go for it!

Interesting about the all-night marriage counter closing down.
