I have to wonder how Americans would react to this sort of disaster? These people are walking miles and miles with the minimal of belongings to find friends, relatives, or a place of safety. They are stoic and valiant. My heart breaks for these people and my mind hopes I could emulate their courage.

Those photographs are gorgeous! I'm highly impressed that the wedding photographer kept shooting - I bet s/he does other forms of photography in addition to the the wedding stuff. And in regards to the question of what they might have done - I would have done the quickie wedding myself. Assuming I hadn't wrestled a camera from the wedding photographer myself. *grin*

Like Kristen, I think my first impulse would be to make sure anyone who needed medical attention got it ASAP and everyone found a safe place to be while riding out aftershocks...then I'd worry about getting married. It might take a couple hours or it might take a few days, depending on how badly the area I was in got hit.

I would, however, probably want to get married quickly rather than replan everything.

Or, knowing my fevered brain, I might decide Mother Nature had set her sights against us getting married and cancel the whole thing. But I think I would have to have had some serious doubts beforehand to do that. When I married Mr. Twistie there were no doubts.

Besides, if a big quake had hit our wedding day, the wedding party itself were the people most likely to suffer catastrophic injury. We were standing on a wooden platform built into the side of a very small hill. If it had come down, someone would have been in pretty bad shape. If there had been a little tremble, though, we'd have just gone on with our plans. Here in California, it takes a pretty solid shake before we get very perturbed. We're used to small earthquakes and most things are built to withstand a lot of wobbling.

All the nattering about me aside, my heart goes out to the victims of this horrible disaster.

Honestly, I'm not sure I would have had the presence of mind immediately afterwards to keep going through with it. Maybe a few days later, something brief but as meaningful as possible under the circumstances -- get a few friends and family together, whoever was available, just to witness the vows and try to insert some joy into a terrible situation. But in the moments following a disaster like this, I suspect I'd be more concerned with the safety and well-being of myself and my guests than with trying to keep going through the motions.

That and I have a thing about dates. I wouldn't want my wedding day associated with the anniversary of something like this. Just a personality quirk of mine.
