LOVE/HATE: the Swati Argade edition

By Never teh Bride

All right, I’ll admit it. I love saying “Swati Argade.” While I have no idea how one ought to say it, I’ve certainly enjoyed trying out different permutations of the Indian-American clothing designer and entrepreneur’s name.

Let me preface this edition of LOVE/HATE by saying that these designs are something like two years old. I can’t be sure they’re still out there. Basically, I enjoy saying (and reading) the names “Swati” and “Argade” so much that I found myself compelled to ignore the age of these designs.

Besides, it’s wedding season, and those people who have been invited to attend said weddings are frequently looking for a little inspiration. I know this because these lucky — depending on how you look at it — individuals often reach out to me to ask what they should wear to a wedding taking place in such-and-such a location at such-and-such a time.

I’ll spare you any further blathering on my part and simply say that I LOVE these two exteremely versatile outfits. Were I to see them on a duo of fellow guests at a wedding I was enjoying, I’d have to corner the chicks in the ladies room to ask where they purchased their clothes. In fact, considering what I do for a living, I’d probably gush so long and so hard that they’d begin to fear for their personal safety.

This, on the other hand…well, it…how about I just point out that every designer will have her hits and have her misses? It’s HATE all the way.

Honestly, I cannot even begin to describe what is going on here. It’s like someone tookthree or four unrelated pieces of clothes and, much like Dr. Frankenstein, used some form of unholy science to merge them into one schizophrenic outfit.

What say you?

  1. Cindy Says:

Oooh - I love the orange dress!!!

    *lusts*

  2. Twistie Says:

I will do battle with Cindy for custody of that orange one. Heck, I’d love the pink one, too, if pink didn’t usually make me look like I’m in an advanced state of jaundice. Those two are gorgeous and versatile and generally superfantastic.

    The third one, though…oh dear.

I’ve never cared for bubble skirts, but this one is the single most heinous one I’ve ever laid eyes on. It looks like one of the huge bell sleeves I wore back in the proto-seventies (what? I was nine) worn as a skirt with the shoulder part at the knees.

My one gripe (other than the bubble skirt, which should go without saying) is the tendency to close the necklines with a button, because I hate a tight collar. The colors and shapes, though - YUM. Wonder if they come in plus sizes… *clicks through*

  4. Jennie Says:

Emergency!!! Upper end bridal shop in Charlotte locked their doors this morning leaving dozens of brides without dresses or money! (not me, been there did it, won’t again) Any suggestion for these ladies?

  5. Never teh Bride Says:

Gah, Jennie…I can’t believe how many times I’ve read similar stories in newspapers. What is it about these shops?! A Google search for “bridal salon closes its doors” nets plenty of results from this year, last year, and many years before.

I’d tell those brides-to-be to reach out to their local network news programs (and possibly state and city newspapers) because those people have a way of getting results. If nothing else, nice folks sometimes see those reports and offer to outfit the jilted ladies ASAP.

The other thing I’d suggest is looking for online dress shops that offer rush shipping or sites that have gowns in stock for immediate delivery. Yes, it means buying a dress twice, but at least they’ll have something to wear. If they know the manufacturer/model/size of the gown they bought (and they might not because of tag ripping) they may be able to buy the same dress at an online shop. It’s worth taking a look!

  6. Chiken Says:

I guess I’m crazy because I LOVE the last outfit! It’s more daring, sure, but it’s tres chic. Ah well, to each her own….

  7. Johanna Says:

Chiken, I kinda like it too, althoug wearing it might be too much worrying about looking like a lampshade. I think it would be great at a small party where everyone knows each others quirks already. The cut on the top looks beautiful and the color is sweet.

  8. Nariya Says:

    I love that pink outfit!

The last one to me says: Here are my breasts! Look at them! Okay, now look at my stomach! See how it is so big my clothes do not fit around it all the way. Now look at my large hips and thighs!

And it looks like this on a skinny model.

It does divide the figure up in an innovative manner, and makes a statement, to be sure. I just wouldn’t say it does so in a particularly attractive or wearable manner.
