Stocking Up for a Halloween Wedding

As the spookiest day of the year draws closer, there are at least some brides- and grooms-to-be out there who are thinking about their 2010 Halloween weddings. If you’re one of them and you’re not looking to go into full-out witchy pumpkin overkill, you can still incorporate some of the season’s haunted fun into your event. It’s easy, for example, to make Halloween the focus of your favors without going overboard, because when it comes to bombonieres, silly can be good.

Halloween favor boxes

It’s All in the Packaging
Plain chocolates, candied almonds, loose tea, bath salts…no matter what you plan to give your guests, it will look more festive and fun in a Halloween-themed package. If you want something that’s easy and inexpensive, opt for tiny trick-or-treat bags. Craftier couples can try their hand at making gift boxes like these, made using supplies from Making Memories.

Seasonal Is Good
Buy miniature jars of pumpkin butter or apple butter — call local u-pick farms to see if you can get a bulk discount — and then print your own self-adhesive labels featuring plenty of black cats, ghosts, and grinning skeletons. Alternately, tie orange and black ribbons around the lid of each jar, and call it a day.

See the Light
If there’s one thing that’s never difficult to find in any color or aroma combo, it’s candles. If all you just want to coordinate with a Halloween color scheme, buy black and orange votive candles in scents like pumpkin pie, spice, and (mmmm) candy corn. For a more overt look, try molded candles in the shape of ghosts, tombstones, pumpkins, witch’s hats, and (mmmm) candy corn.

Halloween favors

A Guest’s Gotta Eat
Your thoughts may turn immediately to pumpkins…pumpkin biscotti, itty-bitty pumpkin pies, or little bottles of pumpkin flavored syrup, but don’t discount the more theme-y food favors. From chocolate skulls to ghostly brownie pops and cookies shaped like bats (all of which are available at Williams-Sonoma and elsewhere), spooky foods abound.

Like I said above, Halloween wedding favors can definitely range into silly territory, but it’s all about balance…or not. You can get a little spooky by slipping some subtly skulltastic favors on your tables or go all out with pumpkins upon pumpkins, black cats, cobwebs, and spiders in your decor, on your tables, and in your cake. It is, after all, up to you, so if you love Halloween, go nuts!

Darnit, NtB, why didn’t you live next door to me when I was a kid? Never mind that you weren’t even a glint in your daddy’s eye at the time, I needed you there so SOMEONE would take the dratted candy corn off my hands. I’d have saved you from all the black licorice you wanted me to in return. Neither of my brothers liked candy corn either, and I always had to fight the alpaca rancher to get any of the medieval historian’s licorice. Humph.

I think a Halloween wedding would be loads of fun, simply because it’s a great excuse for skulls and pumpkin-flavored things. I love skulls and pumpkin-flavored nearly anything.

Oh man, we could have had such the thing going! We might have bickered over anything pumpkin flavored, however, as I too love it. I’ve been digging the recipes you’ve posted lately over at the Big Girls blog. Yum!
