De, I know exactly what it's like trying to come up with options for both vegetarians (there were at least eight or ten at my wedding, including the MOH) and serious carnivores! We did basic picnic fare (it was a pretty informal outdoor wedding that we self-catered) with a centerpiece of a build-your-own-sandwich station. Some people stacked four kinds of meat on the bread, others made completely vegetarian masterpieces, and most of us did something in between. It was a huge hit and nobody went home hungry. That was Mr. Twistie's main goal for the day because he'd been to too many weddings where people didn't get enough to eat, whether it was because there simply wasn't enough food to go around or because dietary needs weren't accounted for.

And I'm a firm believer in the idea that no bride or groom should go hungry at their own wedding reception because of lack of options! You definitely need to make sure there's something you can eat at your own wedding.

Melissa B., that strudel sounds so delicious I'm drooling in a most unladylike manner.

De, congrats on your engagement!!

One of my major requirements for a caterer was a decent vegetarian option -- 2 of my bridesmaids are vegetarians, and I think they're sick to death of eating extra side dishes or being served a boring dish of pasta with red sauce. I was really impressed with what the caterers came up with as a "vegetarian alternative" (goat cheese and roasted vegetable strudel ... yum!). There's definitely no reason for a vegetarian bride to go hungry!

Wow, this post is right on the money Twistie. I *just* got engaged on Halloween (I KNOW!), and already I have had 2 of my friends mention my future-still-undecided menu.

History: I am a vegetarian of nearly 5 years, for health reasons. My fiance (hehe) is a devout carnivore. It works for us because we enjoy the challenge of making meals that are adjustable one way or the other for one of us.

I have a few veggie friends (that span the spectrum) and two of them have already said "Oh I'm glad at least ONE wedding will have something I can eat!" when I was calling to give them the happy news.

Having been the guest who ate just the mashed potatoes or fruit/cheese for dinner at many a wedding, I feel like I have a tiny bit to prove. That we can have a great spread (something that's important to both of us) and still have more than 1 delicious option for our veggie friends (and myself!!).

As I told my fiance (hee again!) "Its my wedding day and I will NOT go hungry at my own party, tyvm." I said it was the one thing I would go Bridezilla over.

I have 11 months to plan, so we'll see where it goes.

I'm a meat-eating girl myself, but the best wedding food I've ever had was an all-vegetarian reception. The hors d'ouevres were delicious and the entree was a vegetarian pot pie with artichokes in it. Yum.

But you're so right that family members can get worked up about these things. My brother (a groomsman) has threatened a revolt if there's no beef at the wedding!

My mother's wedding wasn't meat or alcohol-free, but we do ahve two cousins that are vegetarian - one refuses to "eat anything that used to have a face". So what we did was have a stir-fry station: everyone got to choose chicken, beef, neither, or both, and what sauce they wanted, and the caterers stir-fried right there. It was fast (so the line kept moving), customizable (so no one got anything they didn't want), tasty, and pretty fun. There was also some portobello ravioli in lemon butter sauce, which was ALSO vegetarian friendly, but no one really cared that meat was scarce.

And as for the booze . . . well, I come from a family of drinkers. The only question we had to answer when we were planning it was "open bar, or cash?" Since one of my uncles owns a nearby liquor store, and was willing to sell us the bottles at cost, it was kind of a no-brainer. But if I were to go to a wedding where there was no alcohol, I wouldn't feel slighted. I don't need to drink to have a good time :D

We had a meat-free reception, and I'm happy to say that people gorged themselves on what we did have...a creamy pasta primavera, a yellow curry, stuffed mushrooms, and a whole bunch of other tasty things. I don't think anyone really noticed the difference, honestly, as I've had everything we served at our wedding at omnivorous weddings.

From what I've learned as a vegetarian, there are very few actual vegetarian-specific foods, i.e., foods that our omnivore friends aren't already familiar with. Now if I could only convince my father to stop calling regular old pizza "vegetarian pizza" just because it doesn't have six kinds of meat on it, I'll be happy!
