LOVE/HATE: The Just A Bit Busy Edition
You know how disappointing it is to watch a fashion show only to realize that there is no way in hell you would ever look good in any of the clothes that came swishing down the runway? I don’t get that feeling with Elie Saab. While I certainly wouldn’t look good in all of Saab’s beautiful gowns, there are plenty that would flatter women of many shapes and sizes.
That said, even brilliant visionaries have a hiccup now and again.

This wedding dress from Saab’s spring/summer ’08 collection is fully embroidered with guipures, sequins, and paste. A silver brocade off-the-shoulder top is balanced by a long train. Doesn’t that make it sound nice? Too bad a picture can replace a thousand words. What I want to know is what exactly those off-white bunches are… they’re scattered all over the bodice, framed by sparkly stuff. I tend to hate anything that looks like an afterthought. Was Saab thinking “The gown is done, beautiful. But how to make it better? I know! I’ll sew scrap fabric all over it!” Gah.
What say you?

It reminds me of some old images of mermaids that are made to look like they’re part choral. Or she’s got kelp and other sea stuff stuck to her.
I like it. It looks beachy.
WHOA!
it’s almost like they took superglue to parts of the dress and like, patted it on the sewing room floor.
is it just me or does it look like that model is having trouble standing under the weight of that gown?
Beachy? Perhaps in the sense that it appears to be covered in barnacles.
Whoa. That’s, um, extremely embellished. The skirt is actually gorgeous, I think, but the bodice has Way Too Much Going On. I’m with NtB, if those random fabric scraps were gone (and the silver beading on the bodice was reigned in just a little bit) it would be much prettier.
Um, did the bedazzler barf next to the crochet doily flowers when the glue gun was trying to kill the gohst, I mean dress?
I rather like it. I bet that those are satin or lace florets, and that it looks a lot better live and close-up, where they can be identified.
I’m not feeling that. It’s way too much.
though my dress is barely embellished at all, i have a certain affinity for this dress. i tell myself i shouldn’t like it, but i just can’t help myself!
I expect it actually does look better in person; from what I can see, those are separate, re-embroidered flowers attached. I’m not a minimalist, so a lot of what other people find excessive is perfectly fine to me; I think I might have organized it differently, however.
And used a lot more trim.
magnificent peice of fantasy
it reminds me of fairies, the way it sparkels, and the pecices of fabric like leaves, or a mermaid, i like it and if it was lessend i think it would still look nice. like simple beauty.
I rather love the bottom front part of it, but what happened to the top?
@Jennifer My guess is that a bedazzler barfed on it.
right people, obviously noone here is a fashion visionary lik saab. He’s brilliant and loves to embellish, couture is not meant to be worn by everyone. It’s a work of art! Don’t hate it! I bet all of you would never even be able to attempt making something this amazing! His talent is overwhelming
@emma: there are no sacred cows on this blog. While Saab has created some amazing gowns that cause intense lust in my bosom, the fact remains that every designer is going to lay an egg at some point, even if (s)he is a ‘visionary.’
The fact that I cannot sew it does not prevent me from being able to view it critically, nor should it. I also cannot compose like Beethoven, but I know a good piece of music when I hear one, and I know a bad one.
Can you help me?
I want to buy this dress,
where can I buy it??)
thank you)
