To Boldly Go Where No Wedding Cake Has Gone Before

In honor of the new Star Trek movie, I have to let my geek flag fly and feature one Star Trek wedding cake and one Star Trek wedding cake topper that reader and friend oh_chris found on Cake Wrecks. While The Beard and I chose not to include the United Federation of Planets or Star Fleet in our nuptials, I can’t fault those who do because I harbor my own sci-fi fetishes (as does Twistie, I happen to know).

I especially like how nice a job the cake maker did with the Star Trek communicator tier. Sometimes themed cakes are done in such a slipshod way that you have to ask yourself why the baker even bothered to do anything other than stick a few of those pre-fab sugar thingies on. I’m guessing that the cake designer is a trekkie (or trekker, if you like) and was plenty pleased at that particular commission.

Like I said at cake wrecks I totally had those figurines growing up. I think the vulcan is Sarek and the Klingon is Drusla of the sisters always in Worf’s hair.

It’s been a long time, but it’s amazing what my brain retains sometimes.

Actually, blablover5, I the Klingon sister’s name is Lursa. Her sister is B’Etor. They were the Duras sisters. (http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0001664/)

Yeah, I’m a big ol’ Trekkie geek.

And yes, I can confirm emphatically that the Vulcan gentleman is Sarek, Spock’s father.

Interesting side note, Mark Lenard, who played Sarek, also played the first Romulan Commander on Star Trek in the episode Balance of Terror. It’s one of my fave eps from the original series.

What? NtB told you I’m a sci-fi geek.

Mr. Twistie and I didn’t add in any Starfleet details in our wedding (or, actually, any sci-fi goodies at all, even though we were fans of quite a few shows and film franchises. But if it’s done with consideration and humor, I’m absolutely in favor.

And I will admit, when I sat down to write out our ceremony there was a bit of me that wanted to use the words Captain Kirk uses in Balance of Terror in the (sadly, interrupted) wedding of two crew members. Then I remembered that a) the ceremony is never finished, and b) the groom is dead by the end of the episode. It seemed like bad luck.

These cakes, however, would definitely be a good sign that the couple would live long and prosper.

My husband and I managed to get some sci-fi geek wonderfulness into our wedding (both Star Wars touches although we are fans of many franchises). None of it was as obvious as the wedding cake, but was enough to make people perfectly clear that it was our wedding.

Our wedding party was introduced at our reception with the “Throne Room/End Title” music from A New Hope (its the music playing when Leia gives Han, Luke and Chewbacca their medals at the end of the movie).

The wedding party danced to Meco’s Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band (featured here minus the movie clips). It was a definite icebreaker (all the guys knew each other, all the girls knew each other; none of the guys really knew the girls) and really set the tone that our wedding (although having some very formal aspects) was going to be a cut loose and let your hair down affair.

I love it. My heart is the heart of a geek. (I refuse to give it back, too.)

  6. dr nic: That sounds absolutely fantastic! I have to wonder if there were any older or more conservative guests who thought it was kind of weird… not that it would matter, of course. I wish I’d added a few more little touches like that to my own wedding. The sci-fi fans would have loved it, and I get the feeling that the non fans would hardly have noticed!
