I think there is room for touches like this in even the most sophisticated of affairs. As long as you're not overdoing the quirkiness (in which case it may become a fairly relaxed event without the bride/groom intending it to be so) you can maintain an overall feel of elegance while also putting a personal stamp on your reception that goes beyond choosing cream cheese icing over buttercream or lilies instead of roses.
