I saw that episode too. To be fair, I don't think the consultant was being serious suggesting that they not feed people. However, they can definitely be WAY too pushy there. You really have to be able to read a bride and tell if you're working her too hard.

I don't think I could ever go to a store like Kleinfelds. Its interesting for me to watch sometimes on TV, but it comes across as very high pressure, and NONE of the dresses appear to be in my own budget range (which was under $1k).

And none of the dresses look like the kind I would want either - they all follow the same pattern of white, poofy, some sparkle, usually strapless. Ah well.

Even when the bride has said "I don't want white" or made any kind of stipulation like that, they always bring her the same exact things.

Oh my goodness, I am SO glad you called out this episode. I generally avoid the bridal tv shows, but I was flipping one day and got sucked in to this exact episode. After it was over, I sent an email to my parents and fiance telling them about the consultant's line about cutting friends and family out of your wedding so you can afford an extravagantly expensive gown that you'll wear once. They all concluded that they were glad I am NOT that kind of girl.

It's RIDICULOUS to even consider that!

Not feeding everyone as a cost-cutting move? With the aim of paying for a $6000 dress? I ... uh ... words fail. But sadly, I know people do stuff like this. An acquaintance told me that her sister-in-law spent half their budget on her gown, and cut, among other things, chair rentals in order to afford it. So not every guest had a place to sit down! But the "not feeding everyone" strategy trumps that by a mile.

Good for that bride for taking her business elsewhere. I never once felt pressured to go over my gown budget, and no one else should either.

You invite people who are important to you to a wedding. Everything else, except the future spouse, is a luxury item.

I'm a firm believer in early morning weddings followed by wedding breakfasts or early afternoon weddings followed by afternoon tea as a way to rein in the food budget. But if you're having a ceremony with the reception at lunch or dinner time, there bloody well better be a full meal.

The idea that the dress is more important than the guests just flummoxes me.
