A Little Bit of Happy, A Little Bit of Drama

My favorite wedding color scheme pairings are those that are just a tad unexpected, usually because the two or three or more colors chosen are not typically seen together. Other color combos are surprising because of the extreme visual contrast between the hues, while some are a little shocking because the chosen colors are seldom combined in decor or fashion or art or weddings.

One unexpected wedding color combination I’ve been loving lately is yellow and gray, where the yellow is bright and/or cheerful and the gray is either quite muted or so in-your-face as to be practically silver. Both work brilliantly, though for different reasons. Plus, yellow and silver were big late last year and early this year, so there’s no shortage of wedding accessories for the bride and groom who want to rock this combo. If you like it or think you may love it, here are some images that may inspire you.

Sometimes bridesmaids wear yellow and wear gray accessories, and sometimes bridesmaids wear gray or silver and carry yellow bridesmaids’ bouquets. These bridesmaids photographed by Stephanie Williams wore a soft gray AND yellow! (via)

Something Different To Carry When You Marry

I can’t get enough of these awesome alternative bridal bouquets crafted by Design Whimsy. Each is custom made for the bride (or bridesmaid) who will carry it in the wedding, and almost all are made with far more ribbons, feathers, and brooches than flowers, if in fact they include any flowers at all! Check these out:

I love them and wish I’d known about them when I was getting married. I made my own bridal bouquet and was extremely proud of the results of my efforts, but I’d have been equally happy letting someone else do the work. The prices on these vary quite a bit due to differing materials costs, but from what I can tell they’re generally reasonably priced. All in all, they’re a neat alternative to traditional floral bridal bouquets.

Twistie’s Accidental Monday Caption Madness: The Egg on Twistie’s Face Edition

So…you all know how this works. I post a picture on sunday that nobody but I can see on a computer for some reason I have yet to fathom. Honest, it does show up on my computer and on Mr. Twistie’s laptop, I swear.

Anyway, the next day when it is pointed out to me that the picture I have chosen is visible only to me and my imaginary friends, I panic, stomp on NtB’s posting, and pick a new pic.

You send in your best captions via the comments, being very sure to stop by NtB’s monday post so you don’t miss her deathless prose or the gorgeous pics pointed out to us by our own sterlingspider, and next saturday I will pick a winner having bowed my head in shame for five long days.

Today’s picture comes to you courtesy of the fact that I have foodstuffs all over my face:

Ready…set…snark!

(oh, and be sure to let me know right away if you can’t see this one, either)

Quality Never Goes Out of Style

Sterlingspider, goddess of nearly all things crafty, recently sent along a link to a blog post over at Mary Cirbet’s Needle ‘N Thread that featured a beautifully embroidered wedding dress that is nearing its centennial anniversary. While there is unfortunately no full-length photograph of the wedding dress, there are plenty of images that illustrate just how well this garment seems to have stood the test of time… from the point of view of style, anyway.

Unfortunately it was not well-stored, and as a result “the tulle on the shoulders and sleeves has turned a dark brown, and although feeling somewhat brittle in some places, it can still be gently handled. The lining of the dress is decaying in shreds, but the silk crepe of the dress itself is still in lovely shape.” Shame, that. I think it must have been absolutely lovely in all its glory way back in the day, and I see similar patterns of embroidery (positively not hand embroidered) all the time on present-day wedding dresses.

We can learn a lot from this wedding dress with its embroidery that looks stunningly gorgeous after nearly 100 years. First, classic beauty never truly goes out of fashion. Styles may change, albeit very slowly in the land of brides, but there are some things that will plainly look just as good 50 years from now as they do today and other things that will look terribly dated a mere 10 years from now. Second, it pays to invest in quality if you’re planning on keeping your wedding dress to pass on to tomorrow’s bride. The silk crepe and silk thread is still looking good, and the detail looks like it was done yesterday. If you can afford not to, don’t scrimp.

And finally, if you’re going to preserve your wedding dress for whatever reason, do it correctly so we can all ooh and ahh over it decades and decades from now!

Twistie’s Sunday Caption Madness: The In the Beginning Edition

Hey ho campers! It’s time once again to play Twistie’s Sunday Caption Madness!

You know the drill from here. I post the pic, you send in captions via the comments box, and next week I declare a winner.

Today’s image was brought to my attention by our own Never teh Bride, who now has my undying thanks. That is, in between the convulsive laughter.

Since it’s kind of not safe for work, it’s going under a cut. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Never teh Bride here! The lovely Twistie is away attending a wedding and I cannot see anything wrong with the image other than it’s simply not showing itself. I’m afraid that Twistie will have to re-upload it when she returns since for the life of me I cannot find it… until then, let your imaginations run wild!

Sole of the Party

Unless you’re having a back to nature barefoot wedding, you’re going to need to wear shoes when you’re going down the aisle.

Do you need to get new shoes? That depends on several things. Do you already have a pair of shoes appropriate to the sort of wedding you’re planning? Are they comfortable enough to wear all day, dance in all night, and still feel good? Do they look good with the gown you’ve chosen?

If the answer to all of these questions is ‘yes,’ then you certainly don’t have to get new shoes…though you still may want to get them. If the answer to any of them is ‘no,’ then yes you probably do need new shoes.

The question remains: what sort of shoes do you want to wear?

Twitter at Weddings: Stealing the Show?

After reading Twistie’s spot-on post about tweeting at weddings, I was reminded of something I’d come across a few weeks prior. Hint: It wasn’t the Twitter proposal from almost a year ago.

tweeting at weddings

A certain Stella recently attended a wedding ceremony and reception where a live Twitter feed was displayed throughout on a great big screen hanging over the proceedings. It was technically a virtual guestbook, but I’m going to guess it was rather more distracting than the traditional guestbook that spends the wedding sequestered on a table in a corner somewhere.

My guess is that the temptation to get one’s tweets on the board could lead to preoccupied wedding guests and perhaps even inappropriate tweets from the peanut gallery. Plus, I don’t know that I could help staring up at it, especially if the tweets were coming in quickly. Or were naughty. Have a look at the second picture in the original post then come back and tell us if you could possibly ignore it!
