Please Make It Stop!

If there’s one thing pretty much everyone can agree on it’s that there are wedding traditions (not to mention ‘traditions’) that are better left unobserved. The problem is that so few of us agree on precisely which ones should be ditched and which kept.

There are just so many potential annoyances to choose from.

On person would forever ban throwing anything into a crowd of unmarried people, while another would outlaw the use of bells or clinking glasses to force the bridal couple to kiss on command, yet another would be in favor of a prolonged prison term for any couple who forces guests to wait around bored for two or three hours sans appetizers or entertainment while they get their pictures taken ad nauseum.

Most of these are pet peeves of mine, though I’m actually pretty neutral on bouquet and garter tossing. Do it, don’t do it, I’m down with your decision, whatever your reasons may be. But smash each other in the face with cake or have a cash bar and I’m Not a Happy Camper.

But I’m curious about the rest of you. If you could end forever just one bridal custom, ‘custom’, or faux pas, what would it be?

Wedding Underwear As Wedding Outerwear?

Prina Tornai has come up more than once here at Manolo for the Brides because she is someone who is no afraid to include see-through details in her bridal designs. I’m thinking that she and Julia Kontogruni would have plenty to talk about if they met over a nice cup of coffee somewhere.

While it looks like there’s a chance that this Julia Kontogruni wedding dress isn’t quite see-through in the bodice, it does bear a striking resemblance to quite a bit of the lingerie marketed toward brides specifically for the wedding night. Of course, you’ll see a lot more flesh at the beach on any given summer and it could definitely be racier.

But really now, what the hell is going on here?

LOVE/HATE: The ‘Ground Under Her Feet’ Edition

Plastic aisle runner from the party supply shop? Hand painted aisle runner with a custom monogram? How about neither? Mother Nature has thoughtfully provided an aisle runner in the form of rose petals and possibly bits of other flowers, too.

This absolutely stunning wedding, designed by Show Stoppers and photographed by Pamela Duffy Photo, featured an aisle runner made of petals from 700 lemon yellow roses with a contrasting rusty orange border and sunflowers at the corners.

I love them… but 700 roses? Correct me if I’m wrong – and I may very well be – but it seems like that many roses would pad one’s flower budget quite a bit. There are alternatives, however. I’ve been seeing more rose petal aisle runners that don’t cover the whole aisle, but rather form a pretty pattern along it. Then there are the rose petal borders that flank the ceremony space seating. Finally, there are always dried flower petals, which can be quite reasonably priced, though they might be a bit crunchy underfoot.

Love the use of naturally beautiful flower petals? Hate what feels like a waste of good flowers? Do tell!
