NtB Loves: Amy Jo Tatum

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Yes, that’s right, I love Amy Jo Tatum. Not on a personal level, though I’m sure she’s a lovely person. It’s her wedding dresses that I love – from the fine fabrics, classic styles, and eco alternatives (for the bride with the environment on her mind).

One thing that makes Amy Jo Tatum’s wedding dress collection so versatile is the options. Customizable? Yep! Any dress you see in the collection can be made long, short or in-between. Same goes for sleeve length and necklines.

What Makes It? What Breaks It?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

There are thousands of variations available for every option when you’re getting married. The words of the ceremony, the clothes you choose, the food you serve, color combinations, flower arrangements, not-so-flower arrangements, the music you have played – even what method you use to get that music played, not to mention dozens of other things.

But let’s face it, some of these options matter more to you (and to your guests) than others.

Some people can’t stand anything that varies from strict tradition, while others wouldn’t want to be caught dead at a wedding that doesn’t challenge nearly every tradition in the book. Some people hate buffets with a purple panting passion, while others find pre-plated meals stuffy. For some it’s all about pomp and circumstance while others prefer something casual and light-hearted. For some, as long as the wedding ends with a married couple they don’t much care what else does or doesn’t happen. There are people whose priority is food and drink, and those who care more about party favors.

So I’m curious. What matters to you? What makes a really great wedding in your individual opinion? What makes the event a total bust? Did that change when you became the bride?

Talk to me, people. Tell me what you think.

Timeless?

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

As you research options for your wedding, you’ll read and hear a lot about making your day ‘timeless.’ I’m here to tell you this is not something you can truly have.

Your wedding will happen on one specific day. Your choices will be affected by what is available to you at that time. What kinds of dresses are available? What food is popular? What colors? What techniques are popular in photography? What techniques are even available? Every single one of these questions and dozens more will determine as much about what your wedding looks like as your personal taste does.

And you know what? That’s okay.

Catch As Catch Can

Friday, May 14th, 2010

When I polled all you lovely ladies back in February to ask whether you’d be tossing the bouquet, most of you chose “No way! I don’t want to embarrass the single ladies like that.” And more power to you – I would say that at the majority of weddings I attended in my 20s, it was common to see all the unmarried maids who dutifully trudged onto the dance floor for the bouquet toss back the truck up when that notable arrangement came flying at their heads. I’ve even seen a bouquet land on the floor!

But it’s telling that the second most popular poll response was “Yes, absolutely! It’s just harmless fun, so why not?” (followed closely by “No, but I’m not opposed to it. It’s just not something I feel inclined to include,” which is also somewhat telling). What it says to me is that plenty of brides are still tossing the bouquet. For their sakes, I hope that their single friends are as enthusiastic as this:

LOVE/HATE: The ‘So Dreamy’ Edition

We’ve all seen them: The vintage-look, glowy, sun-kissed wedding photographs that are washed out in all the right ways. Oopsie, I think I just gave myself away! I adore this look, which requires just the right light to be perfect but can be fudged with a clever ‘shop.

Aren’t those snaps gorgeous? Or perhaps you think they look too staged, or that these kinds of shots are too trendy and are going to look way out-of-date in twenty year’s time?

Simply Perfect

Sometimes more is definitely more, but in certain rare cases sometimes less really is more. There’s this temptation to fill up every inch of space on wedding reception tables with complicated multi-part centerpieces, plate upon plate upon charger, wedding favors, menus, and more. Could that be why this gorgeous table photographed by Devon wedding photographer Rosie Parson so refreshing?

The colored glasses are fantastic! The centerpieces are simple – the wildflower arrangements are natural and pretty, and I love the way the driftwood hearts coordinate with the watering cans. The overall effect is light and airy and just what I’d want to see at an afternoon wedding in the springtime or summer.
