To TP or Not to TP

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Every year, without fail, I somehow manage to miss the fact that the winners of the annual Cheap Chic Weddings Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest have been announced. And yet, when I do realize the contest has come and gone, I never fail to marvel at the amazing things people manage to do with toilet paper, tape, and glue.

Note: This is not this year’s winner of the Cheap Chic Weddings Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest. This wedding dress isn’t even made of toilet paper, though my first thought upon seeing it was that it would fit right in with some of the non-winning entries. Maybe that’s why the model is so angry?

alien wedding cake movie

I don’t think I need waste my breath (finger strength?) chatting on and on about this awesome Alien wedding cake from Jet City Cakes. You’re either going to love it or think “Ugh, why would anyone do that?” Personally, I think it’s awesome, though I’d think twice about actually having a piece… for obvious reasons.

Cupcakes or wedding cake, pie or fruit tarts a la Mr. Twistie, desserts are only enhanced by setting them down on something pretty. I went hunting around for adorable cake stands and cupcakes stands, and these were my faves:

Inspiration: Skirts!

Monday, June 21st, 2010

On the bridesmaid dress re-wearability scale, skirts are right up there with a dress the individual bridesmaid picks out herself. It’s not difficult to see why – with two pieces, a top and a bottom, there’s a much better chance that the bridesmaids will either like one or the other and also have an opportunity to wear the half they like. And putting aside all those poly satin strapless tops with matching long skirts, outfitting your ‘maids in skirts can be a lot of fun! How about fitted tux shirts and pencil skirts? Or poodle skirts! A sash can stand in for a belt or just choose a skirt with a lot of structure and detail.

My guess would be that finding the perfect shirt and skirt combo for bridesmaids might be a bit more difficult than finding a great dress, but the results, I’d say, are worth it. Really. Check out these awesome bridesmaid skirt looks, all of which are sure to inspire:

Twistie’s Sunday Caption Madness: The Funkiest Chicken Edition

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

How do, caption fans! It’s time once again to play Twistie’s Sunday Caption Madness.

You all know how this works. I post a picture that’s simply sitting up and begging for a caption. You provide said captions via the comments function. Next saturday, I will declare a winner and there will be much rejoicing.

This week’s image comes from the ‘I thought I gave up dropping acid years ago’ file and looks a little like this:

Not Just ‘My Day’: A Very Special Wedding

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Last week, Mr. Twistie and I attended a wedding. A month ago, we hadn’t expected to be there when Rob and Lara tied the knot. Why? Because they had originally planned a destination wedding in Hawaii with only immediate family and a couple of very carefully chosen friends.

Did we mind not making the cut? No. We’re very fond, of course, as are they, but we aren’t their closest friends by any means.

In the end, though, they wound up having a much larger wedding right here in California. It wasn’t their dream. So why did they change their plans?

In a word: Stephanie.

The Limited Wedding Collection – Limited In Scope, But Also In Price

Friday, June 18th, 2010

When a bunch of you sweethearts emailed to tell me that The Limited would be releasing a collection of wedding dresses and bridesmaids’ dresses on June 3, I thought I’d just wait to see what it looked like before rah-rahing. As you can no doubt guess by looking at the date, I wasn’t enthralled enough with what was released to toss up a post to sing its praises. NOT, I should say, that the dresses aren’t pretty, because they are.

I love the little belt on this soft ivory silk gown with its pleats and pockets, and the one below isn’t so bad either… though I’d definitely lose the blah too-small belty sash thing. It is just plain underwhelming.

But even if these aren’t my favorite wedding dresses in the world, the price is certainly right at a mere $298 each. The main problem, as I see it, is the very *ahem* limited scope of the collection, if you can call two wedding gowns and four bridesmaids’ dresses (priced at a sweet $89.50 each) a collection.

It seems like there was quite a bit of hype for six dresses! That said, I do hope there are more to come, and that The Limited keeps its wedding gowns around instead of making the whole thing a limited time offer a la the Target wedding dresses. For now, more and more mainstream retailers are jumping on the wedding dress bandwagon, and I think that’s keen. Anthropologie is apparently next – I’m kind of looking forward to it. According to StyleCaster:

The bridal division, which will debut online in Spring 2011, will be its own independent brand. It’s slated to be developed by the design team behind the Anthropologie label. In addition, bridal will adopt a similar aesthetic to the highly recognizable Anthropologie look. Wedding gowns, which will retail in the $1,000 to $5,000 range, will be available, alongside bridesmaids dresses, fine jewelry, shoes, fresh flowers, and invitations.
