Quickie Question: One, Big Splashy Thing?

Darlings, WordPress has only just let me in, for which I humbly thank it. But not daring to assume my time here is unlimited, I’m going to make this a quick one about dreamy wedding dreams.

Most of us dream of some fabulous thing for our weddings. For some, it’s a particular gown, for another, their favorite band to play the reception, for yet another, a magnificent display of glorious orchids.

My dream, if I had things to do again, is a spectacular dessert table bursting with delicious confections to delight both the eye, the nose, and the taste buds. Cake, pie, tarts, truffles, cookies of several kinds, a trifle, peanut brittle… whatever goodies I might decide I could churn out (with a little help from talented friends) in the days leading up to the festivities.

I love to bake, I love to feed people, and I do believe that dessert is an important part of the meal.

So that’s my dreamy dream of one spectacular thing. What do you dream of? Tell us all about it!

The Secret

I’m going to let you in on a secret. It’s one you won’t find in most bridal magazines or planning books or even blogs. You certainly won’t see or hear it in most bridal reality programs on TV! It’s an important secret, and one that will help you make your wedding the best possible wedding you can have.

No, it’s not about money or venues or an accessory or how you choose to wear your hair. It’s much, much more basic than that.

La Vie Boheme

I love a good accessory as much as the next woman. More than some. And I find myself wildly drawn to the work found at Lo Behome, a designer of fabulous flights of bridal fancy like the Cleo Fascinator, shown here. It can be worn in a variety of ways and attaches to your updo of choice with alligator clips.

But wait, there are other great accessories at Lo Boheme!

On Your Toes: How to Keep Your Feet Comfortable at Your Wedding

Let’s face it: on your wedding day, you’ll be on your feet a lot. From the time you put on your gown, you’ll probably spend most of the rest of the day standing, walking, posing, dancing, posing some more, walking, and… well, you get the picture. Believe me, I’ve known a lot of brides who never got to sit down again once they got going!

And if there’s one thing I know from my many misspent years in retail sales, it’s that miserable feet make it extra-difficult to keep up a picture-perfect smile. When it came time to plan my own wedding, comfortable feet were among the less traditional priorities I chose. It paid off, too. When I got ready for a quiet evening of basking in being married to Mr. Twistie, my feet felt as good as they had that morning when I rolled out of bed.

The funny thing is, it wasn’t all that difficult. If you’re thinking about how to keep your feet happy all day, I’ve got a few tips to help you in your efforts.

This and That From the Wonderful World of Weddings

Every once in a while, someone comes along here and tries to sell me on the idea that weddings can only be nicely done with professional planning. While some may find a planner useful, and I’d be the first one to advise they use one, it’s hardly the only way to go. I like to encourage couples to think outside the box and find their own way of making a statement.

Well, I found a perfect example of how beautiful a handmade, very personal wedding can be.

This lovely Canadian couple used furniture from their parents’ homes, leftover wood from the groom’s father’s lumber mill, volunteers, elbow grease, and a little forethought to create an elegant, unique, and utterly charming wedding on their own. Read the whole story and see more pictures at Ruffled.

Oh, and David Tutera? Eat your heart out.

Quickie Question: Cake Dreams

It’s a well-known fact that I love cake. I love baking, I love to eat baked items. It’s as simple as that.

Funnily enough, when Mr. Twistie and I got married, we didn’t have a cake. We had individual fruit tarts in half a dozen flavors. I had been thinking of a cake, but then I discovered that Mr. Twistie wasn’t much of a cake fan. Why make him eat something he dislikes for dessert at his own wedding? He was the one who came up with tarts, and they were a great idea.

Still, there are times when I dream of the wedding cake I would have liked to have had. It would have featured chocolate, with layers of hazelnut and coffee flavors, too. As for the frosting? Probably a cinnamon buttercream. Maybe some raspberry filling.

What? Those are some of my favorite desserty flavors, and I would have wanted them. And while fondant make a particularly smooth and pretty cake that lasts well, it just doesn’t taste as good to me as a good old-fashioned buttercream.

So what about you? What would your dream cake look/taste like? What flavors do you want? Or would you rather have something other than cake?

I’m curious, so tell me all about it!

Birds of a Feather

I have to admit that most of the time I’m not that interested in cake toppers. It’s not that I object… just I don’t usually get the fuss or the interest. For me the cake is more interesting than the decoration in general and the topper in particular. What? I’m all about what’s on the inside, you know.

Still, every twice in a while I do see a cake topper that sets me all a-twitter with delight. The one above does just that. I mean how adorable is it to see a love bird wearing a bird cage veil? Love!

These birdies and many more of a similar ilk, as well as some delightful penguins, charmingly funky owls, and yes, even some quite pretty people, can be found at the store of etsy artist Red Light Studio. They start at roughly $100 and go up from there, and are custom designed for the couple in question.
