The Wonderful World of Bridal Blogging

Monday, June 30th, 2008
By Twistie

Since the fabulous Never teh Bride finds herself without access to Word Press today, you guys get another day of Twistieness this week. Let’s all wish NtB a fabulous day sort-of-off and get down to business.

There have been some great posts of late out there in the bridal world, and I thought I’d point you in the direction of a couple of stand outs. First on the list is not from a bridal blog. It’s from Shapely Prose, where Fillyjonk has written an excellent article on the difficulties brides of size find in getting what they need in bridal salons and how to bypass the Wedding Industrial Complex to get a great wedding outfit. FJ, I’m totally stealing the term Wedding Industrial Complex.

Nina’s Weddings Blog has some great advice for the bride who wants to make her own wedding cake. This is meant for someone who is already an experienced home baker, but it definitely takes some of the mystery and terror out of the concept. Trust me, if you can make a nice cake, you can make a simple wedding cake. She’s also got a link to another blog with an even simpler plan that sounds delicious.

The Engaged Guy gives us a timely reminder that sometimes even the groom has trouble getting the outfit he wants. Luckily, the story has a happy ending.

iDo Sugar discusses a…er…somewhat…specialized and painfully intimate bridal beauty product. This is probably not work safe and definitely not for the faint of heart. All I know is I’m glad nobody thought of it before and I really wonder what the hell prompted anyone to think of it now.

A Practical Wedding showcases a lovely, elegant small wedding held at a lighthouse in Sausalito, CA. Gorgeous and dignified.

A Little of This, A Little of That
asks a question that had definitely been haunting me of late in light of seeing too many episodes of Say Yes to the Dress. I don’t know if an answer has been found, but the question definitely needed asking.

NtB will be back on the job tomorrow, so I’ll see all you guys next weekend!

Win a free autographed copy of iDo: Planning Your Wedding with Nothing But ‘Net!

iDo! Do you?

News of iDo: Planning Your Wedding with Nothing But ‘Net is getting around, thanks to my ubercool publicist at Simon & Schuster and the word getting around. The sweeties over at Aisledash called me a “wedding guru,” which made my entire weekend. I was quoted in an article on Smartmoney.com, and I’m being interviewed for an article in the NY Post tomorrow. And there was an entire article based on iDo in the NY Daily News!

If you’d like to see what all the fuss is about — or you already own one copy of my book and you’d like one for a friend — tell me in the comments what you think I should call my next wedding planning book. Be as silly or serious as you want to be — there’s no guarantee I’ll ever cop your title, but you never know!

At noon EST on Wednesday, June 25, I’ll use a random number generator to pick the lucky commenter who will win an autographed copy of iDo.

One: Remember how I made soap using a soap kit from Bramble Berry? If you read the whole post, you may recall that I used regular old food coloring (the sort in the teardrop shaped bottles) so I could enjoy a little more sudsy variety. Because I didn’t want anyone who tried the kit getting mad at me, I wrote: “I don’t recommend you do the same because I’m not yet sure the resultant soaps won’t turn you blue or green.”

However, I am now happy to state that I’ve been using one of my dyed-with-food-coloring soaps for a while not and have not yet turned green.

Two: Check me out over at iVillage! In honor of iDo’s official release, they asked me to create a list of five web sites I think every bride-to-be should visit while planning her wedding. The result is up on the iVillage wedding blog From “I Will” to “I Do”.

Interested in being in the news?

By Never teh Bride

A major news outlet is looking for a bride-to-be (preferably one living on the east coast) who would be willing to share the stresses of her planning experience on-camera. It’s not some cheesy bridezilla segment, just a report on the stress triggers future brides face in the course of planning. The caveat is that the deadline for the segment is noon tomorrow, so they pretty much need to hear from you by tonight.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, shoot me an email at Never.teh.Bride@gmail.com and I’ll forward your e-mail onto my contact. No guarantees they’ll bite, but it’s always fun being on the news!

MftB readers ROCK

Reader comments have been unbelievably fabulous lately, so I thought I’d share a handful here in case there are actually people out there who haven’t given in to the impulse to explore popular opinion.

Alex said:
If you want to donate to charity, that’s wonderful and generous of you. Please don’t make the decision for me. It is in no way shape or form a favor or gift for me. Don’t get me wrong, I think donating to a charity you believe in is great and I think people have their hearts in the right place…I’m just not sure why exactly it has to be announced to me, you know?

Innkeeper Jason said:
Sometimes these doubts are seeds that have been planted by other people and sometimes it is just nerves and sometimes perhaps you are marrying the wrong person. For those of you who have called it off, I applaud you for the courage it must have taken.

Toby Wollin said:
Actually, my favorite periods are up through about the mid-60s: you could still get a dress with a decent neckline, sleeves, and interesting skirts and waists. Once you get into the 70s it was Gunnysack Hell, and then straight down the road to the Strapless Follies. If I had to make myself a bridal gown today, I’d go straight to the vintage pattern folks and look there.

If any of you have purchased (or been given) any diamond jewlery between Jan. 1, 1994 and March 31, 2006 check out Diamondsclassaction.com and file a claim to get a refund from the lawsuit against DeBeers. Apparently they had an illegal monopoly on diamond sales during those years (is that really surprising at all?).

It’s not hard to be dedicated to love, tulle, and cake

Getting recognized as a great resource by a great resource–what could be better?

Ever since Polka Dot Bride won the first ever Wedding Blog Awards, um, award, I’ve been keeping an eye on the site. Every now and again a certain Abby chooses a new blog or photog to highlight in categories like “Best New Wedding Blog” and “Best Use of Photos.” Long story short, the site has introduced me to some fab blogs.

Now it seems that we’re this month’s “Most Dedicated” blog! Go us! I’ll tell you, though, it’s easy to be dedicated when you absolutely, positively love what you’re doing. I mean, I’m humble…but I’m not that humble. For example I’m not so humble that I won’t use this webbish award as an opportunity to suggest that you ready yourself for the eventual release of iDo, which can now be pre-ordered on Amazon and elsewhere!

Happy Hanukkah from Ntb and Twistie!

But can you spin it?

I found this beautiful wedding dreidel when looking for some way to keep this holiday greeting on topic, a la The Manolo’s fab shoe menorah. Like it? Artists Melanie and Harry Dankowicz use lasercut paper to create beautiful and intricate works of art and custom wedding invitations that merge traditional Jewish motifs with contemporary themes.

Now go, grab yourself some gelt, and have a wonderful Festival of Lights!

Happy Turkey and/or Tofurky Day!

By Never teh Bride

Now that’s one beautiful bird

She’s a beautiful bird, but she’s gonna get ate. Not by me, though. The Beard and I feed the kitties meat but we’re not fans ourselves, so we’re cooking up a Tofurky. I’m pretty sure The Beard plans to deep fry it (how distinctly American!) but I can’t say for sure. Cooking is just not my thing, and this is a working holiday for yours truly as the book deadline approaches almost too quickly for comfort.

Anyway, eat something tasty on my behalf and I’ll eat something tasty on your behalf. Happy Thanksgiving!
