Inspiration: A Striking Trio

Love green, black, and white weddings? Check out this one, found on Brides.com!

green black and white wedding

The deets: High-school sweethearts Jena and Justin had themselves a gorgeous, chic, unfussy green, black, and white wedding in Whitney, FL. Green gerbera daisies, green hydrangeas and spider mums, and Jade roses looked even brighter when paired with black bridesmaids’ dresses, black-and-white gingham shoes by Jessica Simpson, matching gingham ribbon, and even a coordinating umbrella that the bride found because she heard it might rain.

Just Because…

A woman on her wedding day is: sweet, starry-eyed, blissful, and romantic, right? Maybe, but it can be dangerous to generalize, especially when the blushing bride is brandishing firepower instead of flowers. Gun control politics aside, if you’re a bride who is happy to spend a day at the range (or in the wild, hunting critters) then why not pose with your favorite piece while wearing your wedding dress?

Unreal and Out of This World (But Doable)

Ever get discouraged looking at all the staged wedding shoots in magazines (and, er, blogs)? I’m pretty sure that anyone who has decided to attempt some degree of wedding DIY has felt that way, and with good reason. Those wedding ceremonies, dessert buffets, and favors were all created by experienced vendors, arranged by designers, and shot by wedding photographers with all kinds of special lighting and cameras that cost a bazillion dollars. Oh, and let’s not forget that the bridesmaids, groomsmen, and the bride and groom themselves are all sexyhot models! Sure, it’s all inspirational, but why should we, mere matrimonial mortals that we are, be able to replicate the work of seasoned pros?

Here are two examples:

pink and teal wedding

When I first came across an image from this series by the awesome Carla Ten Eyck Photography team, I assumed it must have come from a real wedding. But no. The fact that the backdrop was a kind of bombed-out looking warehouse clued me in to the skinny, which is that all of the photos were part of a workshop for wedding photographers. And what a workshop it must have been! (Hint: If you like what you see and are tying the knot in Conn., the list of vendors who participated in the shoot can be found at the top of the linked post.)

Then there’s this, an Amy Atlas dessert table featured in Brides Magazine. Manolo for the Brides hearts pretty much everything Amy Atlas touches in a big way, and this dessert buffet is no exception. The best part about Atlas’ post about the making of is that she includes a trio of behind-the-scenes shots, so you see a bit of how the pros have to start with a whole bunch of stuff and a table, just like everyone else.

Amazing? Yes. Gorgeous. Definitely? Doable? I like to think so, yeah, but only because so many awesome readers have shared their wedding photos with me after the fact and I’ve seen what y’all are capable of!

Which isn’t to say that you can just wing wedding DIY and have your efforts turn out looking like Amy Atlas broke into your wedding reception venue in the night to set things up. The best way to approach wedding DIY is to practice, practice, practice… well in advance of the big day. Maybe it will turn out that you’re a natural at putting together tablescapes (or creating centerpieces or designing wedding invitations), but do you want to find that out that you’re not when there’s no longer enough time to hire someone to do it for you? in short, wedding DIY is doable, even though a lot of vendors will try to tell you it’s not, but if you want your wedding to look as awesome as the staged wedding shoots, you’re going to have to put in the same level of effort!

Peacock – It’s More Than Just a Color

Peacocks are fascinatingly beautiful birds, so it’s no wonder that some brides take their color inspiration from that amazing plumage. But you could go that extra mile and make peacocks your wedding theme, especially if you have no problems using feathers as decor (which some folks do). To me, the most obvious place to use peacock feathers is in the bridal bouquet and bridesmaids’ bouquets, but floral arrangements aren’t the only place they look stunning.

Peacock feathers also look lovely in boutonnieres, where their size means they play a starring role, and in reception table centerpieces. There are plenty of peacock wedding cake designs to be found via GIS, though a talented cake designer would be able to invent one just for you. Peacock feathers could be woven into the flower garlands decorating the ceremony space, or used in other ways to enhance an otherwise blah space, or oR OR…

A Passport to Wedded Bliss

What better way to let your guests know that you’re planning a destination wedding than by re-imagining your wedding stationery as passports and other travel-themed things? A friend of a friend did just that, working with Serendipity: Beyond Design to create pretty passport wedding invitations. Apparently, Serendipity liked the idea so much, they’re now offering custom passport wedding invitations in their Etsy shop!

Serendipity says: “Passports are a great way to excite your guests about the trip! Multiple pages provide enough information about traveling, accommodations, wedding day events and more. Personalize your Passport with a monogram, photo, history, stamps and map.”

Isn’t that almost disturbingly like the first page of a real passport? Well, putting aside the photo of a happy couple where a glowering “I just stood in a line at the post office and all I got was this awful picture” singleton ought to be. As you know, I’m a big fan of taking a theme all the way, and I think this wedding stationery does just that.

In keeping with the theme, the RSVP card is a boarding pass! Sweet!

Inspiration: Peachy Keen

Peachy keen. Just peachy. She’s a peach! However you frame it, peaches are associated with good stuff. Maybe that’s why they make such a fun, pretty wedding theme?

There are so many fun ways to incorporate peaches into your wedding theme, from giving out peach cookies (that taste like real peaches) as wedding favors to dressing your flower girl in a pretty peach dress to an awesome peachy sash. So what if you are getting married in a clime where peaches never grow? Cute and fuzzy, mellow orange and bright pink… peaches are the pets of the produce world. Here are some quick ways you can enrich your wedding theme (or color scheme) with anthropomorphic fruit:

1. Peach cookies from Tickle My Tummy (top left)
2. A peach flower girl dress from I Love Gorgeous (top right)
3. Peach table cards like these from Blooms by Martha Andrews (middle left)
4. Peach reception table decorations like these photographed by Justin Marantz (middle right)
5. A beautiful peach sash from Icing 101 (bottom left)
6. Peach-in-a-nest table decor, again from Blooms by Martha Andrews (bottom right)
