LOVE/HATE: The ‘Hats Off to You’ Edition

When I saw this Maison Michel Uffie miniature top hat with its gauzy veil on The UnBride, I just had to throw it in the LOVE/HATE queue.

bridal tophat with veil

Because, oh goodness, I cannot stand it! While it may indeed be offbeat and thus perfect for the unbride, it looks to me too much like something worn by those old timey cartoon characters. You know, the dumpy fellow with the big head and the tiny hat? Plus, as miniature top hats go, this one is booooring. Plus, the attached veil is just a little awkward. The bride who wants to wear the tiny top hat should look instead at Bubbles & Frown, purveyor of totally sweet mini hats that go for about $100… compared to $645 for the Uffie, which I hate.

What say you?

Where oh where has Bubbles & Frown been all my life????????? Never have I coveted an eyepatch so much in my life! And their mini-toppers are quite spectacular.

As for this…I like the concept a lot better than the execution. I tend to prefer hat OR veil over hat AND veil, but if you’re going to do the combo I think it looks better to do something more akin to a ladies’ riding hat of days long gone by. In that case, one would either have a small blusher that falls just under the chin, like this:

Or a slightly longer veil trailing behind like this:

I have to say I’m down with the concept but left seriously underwhelmed by the execution. Also? At that price tag I expect something a bit less awkwardly designed. Hate…but could love a better one profoundly.

Bubbles and Frown completely ROCKS!!! I’m nearly ready to go Darryl Hannah in Kill Bill and order an eye patch! Not to mention the fab-u-lous hats!

That is a world of ugmo up there. I love the looks La Twistie posted – reminds me of Molly Ringwald’s awesome wedding outfit in Betsy’s Wedding.

Unfortunate combination there. Between the long cascading veil and the tiny hat it looks rather like a tulle Cousin Itt.

Twistie, I totally agree! I think the blusher is the best combo with a top hat. And the long veil with hat made me think of a crappy Victorian ghost costume, hahah.

  6. By all means! Let’s not even try anything different, instead, we’ll continue to tread water in the endless pool of birdcage veils and Monique Lhullier. Jump in! The water is warm. I happen to think it’s refreshing to see something as hateful as this.
