Surprise, surprise, surprise!

What’s the big Valentine’s Day surprise, you ask? It’s that yours truly is engaged. Yes, N.t.B. has entered the ranks of those who are not only obsessed with weddings, but also articulate their expressing by spending thousands of dollars on stuff with no practical purpose! But pretty is purpose enough sometimes, right? Are you with me here?

I know ya’ll love reading about the who, what, when, and where of two people deciding to spend their lives together, so here’s a dramatic re-enactment of the proposal:

Aw, isn\'t that sweet?

Just kidding. The Beard was totally mushy about it, all with the getting down on one knee and the wearing of the ceremonial tie. And while they have not yet arrived, I am getting not one, but two engagement rings! A classic ring set with labradorite and a more modern ring set with Swiss blue topaz.

What’s this mean for the blog? Well, it probably means that you’re occasionally going to have to listen to me while I ramble on about my own wedding planning experiences. And I may just have to bombard you with reviews of the schwag I actually bought, the schwag I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole, and the schwag I wish I had enough money to buy.

First up? Books, of course. I wouldn’t have sprung for wedding planning books…being that I don’t have much need for them…but, heck, this blog is a job, which means that all my books on nuptial know-how are tax deductible! Whoo! I naturally went for some of the more eccentric titles:

Anti-Bride Guide: Tying the Knot Outside of the Box

I Do but I Don?t: Walking Down the Aisle without Losing Your Mind

Offbeat Bride: Taffeta-Free Alternatives for Independent Brides

As an aside, I’m sorry to have to disappoint all the romantics out there, but it wasn’t a Valentine’s Day proposal. I just thought I’d save it up so I’d have something sweet to post for V-Day. So happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Just in case you’re jonesin’ for some cuteness, here is a picture of some pigs in love, courtesy of Go Veg:

OMG CUTE!

Congratulations! I confess I came to the site wondering if today was THE day. And even if it wasn’t THE day I’m so happy for you and the Beard and I’m really looking forward to your wedding planning.

    I live vicariously. *grin*

    Congratulations!

I’d suggest “The Conscious Bride” guide. A friend gave it to me as an engagement gift, along with “Conscious Bride: Wedding Planner” and they have been the books that, when I’ve reached a breaking point, I’ve turning to. They’re really quite good, and different from “Ooh, look at all the pretty flowers.”

Many Congratulations to you and the Beard!

Longtime lurker just coming out of the woodwork to say Congratulations, NtB!

I read the Wicoff book this past summer; it’s terrific! I highly recommend it to those pre-engaged or newly engaged. My boyfriend even read some of it while I had it out from the library. Yes, we’re still BF/GF though at this point that’s kind of a formality, just because my BF has some sort of thing he’s planning re: the ring and a surprise and all that.

Yay NtB! Congratulations…that is very exciting (and about time–hehe). I have had a blast planning my upcoming wedding. Even the stressful stuff somehow ends up being fun. I have loved so much of the stuff you have posted…I use this blog constantly as a resource for all kinds of things. Keep up the great work and congrats again!

Best wishes! (I just saw in a movie “best wishes” are for the bride and “congratulations” are for the groom.) I’m glad the Beard finally did the deed in a sweet way and I look forward to reading about the planning details. I also would love to see pics of your rings when you get them!

    Cheers!

    Best wishes to you!

I received the Anti Bride Guide as an engagement present, and it is probably one of the best pre-wedding gifts anyone could have given me. Definitely worth the read.

Have a wonderful time with your now fiance and enjoy planning and dreaming for now.

Many happy sighs & outcries for the upcoming nuptials. A laboradorite ring–how interesting! A new topic of discovery, of course! Many Blessings on you & The Beard!

  35. Pencils February 15, 2007 at 12:27 am #

Congratulations! You’re not supposed to say that to the bride, but I’m not sure what you’re supposed to say instead. Anyway, that’s wonderful. I love being engaged. Best thing ever. Although I’m hoping being married will be better. And I also have a blue engagement ring, an aquamarine, a lovely vintage one from the 1940s. Good for you.

And congrats to the Beard as well.
